Project overview

Start with the condition of the line.

This Pasadena evaluation involved an aging sewer system with ABS, cast iron and clay piping. The purpose was not to choose a repair method in advance. It was to document the accessible system, clean the line where appropriate and use the post-cleaning camera findings to plan the next responsible step.

Anytime Rooter installed a new two-way cleanout, completed multiple hydro jetting passes and performed a follow-up camera inspection. That sequence created a clearer view of the pipe condition before discussing rehabilitation, replacement or excavation options.

Existing sewer system

Mixed materials and a long route required a measured review.

The accessible system included approximately 12 feet of 4-inch ABS before transitioning to 4-inch cast iron. The sewer lateral measured approximately 44 feet from the sidewalk, with about 79 feet of system inspected in total. Approximately 15 feet of cast iron ran beneath the house.

Near the sidewalk, the observed depth was approximately 6.5 feet or greater. The transition between materials, the length of the run and the depth near the sidewalk all mattered when considering how a future repair could be approached.

What the camera inspection revealed

Cleaning improved visibility, but it did not remove the need for rehabilitation planning.

01

Scale and corrosion

Camera findings showed significant scaling and corrosion within the cast iron portions of the system.

02

Grade changes

Two notable drops or changes in grade were observed near the sidewalk area, requiring careful consideration in repair planning.

03

Bottom deterioration

Approximately 20 to 30 feet of cast iron showed significant bottom deterioration consistent with trench rot.

Cleaning and diagnostic work performed

Clear the line, then inspect what remains.

A new 4-inch two-way cleanout was installed to provide practical access to the sewer line. Hydro jetting was then performed with multiple passes to address accumulated material and improve the ability to inspect the pipe interior.

A follow-up camera inspection documented the pipe condition after cleaning. This distinction matters. Cleaning can remove material that obscures the view, but the post-cleaning inspection is what helps separate removable buildup from deterioration that needs a longer-term repair plan.

Why cast iron deterioration matters

Internal pipe condition can affect both flow and the repair method.

Cast iron can lose interior material over time. Scaling and corrosion can reduce the effective opening of the line, while deterioration at the bottom of the pipe can affect its ability to carry wastewater reliably. A line may still pass water while its remaining pipe wall and base require closer evaluation.

In this case, the deterioration was not treated as proof that one solution would fit every section. The ABS, cast iron and clay connections each needed to be considered alongside the pipe condition, access points and the depth of the route near the sidewalk.

Repair options considered

Several paths can be appropriate, depending on what the line will support.

Mechanical descaling and preparation

Further preparation may be considered where scale must be removed to better evaluate or prepare a suitable section of pipe.

CIPP rehabilitation

CIPP lining may be evaluated where the cleaned pipe condition and access support rehabilitation from within the existing route.

Replacement or pipe bursting

Deteriorated cast iron sections may call for replacement or pipe bursting when the condition and route make that option appropriate.

Conventional excavation

Direct excavation remains an important option where it provides the soundest access to a section that needs replacement or reconnection.

Material transitions

Any repair plan must account for how the work reconnects with the existing ABS and clay piping as the field conditions dictate.

Diagnosis-first approach

The repair method follows the evidence.

The camera inspection, cleaning results and documented deterioration provided the basis for a condition-led repair discussion. Lining, bursting and excavation each have a role, but none should be treated as automatic before the accessible pipe and site constraints have been evaluated.

That approach is especially important for an established Pasadena property. It keeps the next step tied to the actual line condition, the depths involved and the practical connection points, while considering the surrounding home and finished property.

Frequently asked questions

Cast iron sewer evaluation questions.

What can a sewer camera inspection show in cast iron pipe?

A camera inspection can show internal scaling, corrosion, deterioration, changes in grade and other accessible conditions that affect drainage and repair planning.

Does hydro jetting repair deteriorated cast iron sewer pipe?

No. Hydro jetting can remove suitable buildup and improve the view inside an appropriate line. It does not restore missing pipe material, structural damage or an unsuitable section.

Can CIPP lining be used for an older cast iron sewer line?

It may be considered when the cleaned pipe condition, access and defect type support rehabilitation. Camera findings and preparation requirements determine whether it is a suitable option.

When is excavation or pipe bursting considered?

Those methods may be considered when a deteriorated section needs replacement or rehabilitation is not the soundest option. The choice depends on pipe condition, depth, access and the surrounding property.
